Robot Quadrotors Perform James Bond Theme

It’s rare for me to find a video that makes me smile with absolute awe; but tonight folks I have found just that. The University of Pennsylvania’s General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) Lab have been the stars of the Quadrotor scene, by first showing the extremities of quadrotor flight, and now with this perfectly executed musical number #007. The video was revealed to the world yesterday at the TED2012 conference based in California.

Here’s your debriefing on how they managed to make it all come together: Firstly, the room was heavily equipped with infrared lights and cameras, which was used to get an exact barring on where each quadrotor was. The data received was then relayed wirelessly back to the machines to make them aware of their own location, and of their flying comrades.

All the Quadrotors were programmed to follow three-dimensional waypoints, which they had to reach at precise moments in time. Even though the coordinates had been programmed by skilled operators, it was entirely up to each robot to figure out a way to reach it’s appointed waypoints on time, and without disturbing the rest of the mechanical orchestra. I can’t wait for what else they’ll dish out in the future!

VCA 2010 RACE RUN

I almost OD on the amount of adrenaline that surged through me while watching this, I’m glad there are people out there doing super extreme versions of things i do on the regular. For instance, I like to bike joyfully down to the city at a nice constant rate, maybe i’ll decide to live on the edge and not press the breaks on a steep down hill but that’s the extent of my gnarly nature. Luckily for me, i can vicariously live out my wild side because of these head cams- look at “me” having this raw experience of biking through some hectic rural mountain town with fans cheering me on, life is good right now.

Aerostat

Page Stephenson decided to create this simple but amazingly effective plan which resulted in an amazing video! The plan was to attach a Gopro camera to a high altitude balloon and let it capture its journey into the mesosphere. It’s funny, when you slowly zoom out of out lovely planet, you realize how special it is and how interconnected we all are. Now, after i had that “Aww, well that was nice”, i thought, “how on Earth did he get his equipment back?!” I found the answer: He tracked it with Xact Trax as well as the ‘find my iPhone’ app for his iPhone 4, pretty damn smart. Page specifically went through all of this trouble so that he could inspire people to dream big and to have fun! Nice.

Insane Office Escape

Tick tock, tick tock, the clock drearily moves along and the one thing your thinking about is escaping your cubical prison. Well, if you cant because responsibilities have caged you in, you can at least watch this and imagine what freedom feels like. Great first person perspective, really places you in the characters shoes, especially when he’s letting the punches fly. This is a music video for the band Biting Elbows, if your into them check out more of their stuff on YouTube!

Welcome to Hoxford-the fan film

This is so wonderfully done (for a fan film) i just couldn’t help but share it on here. It’s got a dark and twisted story, cool computer graphics and pretty damn good acting. If you have kids around you, i’d tell them to get out of the room and hide under the blankets. Here’s the synopsis of the story: “Raymond Delgado is no ordinary prisoner. On a good day he’ll take the time to tell you he’s the son of Zeus before he tears out your jugular. On a bad day, you won’t even have a moment to call out for help.  After a yet another “incident” Raymond has been transferred to Hoxford, a correctional facility and mental institution known for its radical methods. At Hoxford, Raymond’s not the only predator. Come nightfall, under a full moon, bloodcurdling screams pierce through the darkness of the prison courtyard. It’s hunting hour! As the other Hoxford prisoners huddle in the obscurity of their prison cells trembling in fright, Ray cracks a smile. He thrives on confrontation. Lock a human beast in a cage with a legendary monster and, in your opinion. Who will devour? And who will be devoured?” this short was directed by Julien Mokrani and written by Samuel Bodin Welcome To Hoxford stars Jason Flemyng, Dexter Fletcher and Arben Bajraktaraj. It is adapted from Ben Templesmith’s comic published by IDW.

Little Boat

Simple, beautiful and quite touching, the animation was very well thought out and very detailed (It pays attention to the small mannerisms of things), the story is pretty linear but emotionally jam packed as you grow closer to the character. Hat’s off to you Mr Nelson Boles I hope you win the ONECLOUDFEST Fall Competition, I’m sure you will with this animation. Check his other creations here!

Television is a drug.

Ever wonder what your TV is thinking? The inspiration of this video comes from Todd Alcott’s poem, ‘Television’, which Beth Fulton smartly turned into this interesting piece. Honestly, I’ve pretty much quit watching TV, it’s just filled with so much stupid crap, even the science channels are overflowing with things that blow up. I mean, that’s cool and all but i do like to learn something while doing nothing and i don’t want to wade through a tide of shit channels to find a semi decent show. The internet is where it’s at though, some could argue that it’s worse but here at least you can find what your looking for and still get a social connection. Nothing beats going out into the world and gaining lessons from reality though, it’s entertaining and wholesome.

KEN BLOCK’S GYMKHANA FOUR; THE HOLLYWOOD MEGAMERCIAL

Some crazy, insane, nuts driving by super star Ken Block. Jump to 1:27 for the real action, i didn’t even know driving like this could exist. To add to the action they mixed up some spectacular effects which deliver Hollywood caliber bad assness. Some of the effects include: pyrotechnics, robotic sharks, deranged zombies, and a hilarious cameo by the Epic Meal Time guys. You got to check it out!

Buenos Aires: Las Calles de Borges

Ian Ruschel , a 26 year old Director working at Zeppelin Films in Porto Alegre, Brazil, made this awesome video as a homage to legendary poet Jorge Luis Borges, one of the greatest writers of all time. The video was shot during the 2010 Argentinian winter in Buenos Aires and Capilla del Señor. It was taken with a Canon 5d and with 4 different lenses: Canon 50mm 1.4, Lensbaby 50mm 2.0, Canon Macro 100mm 2.8, Sigma 10-20mm 3.5. The video was then edited and color graded in Final Cut Pro using Twixtor, Knoll Light Factory and Magic Bullet. Check out more of his videos here!

If some of you are not familiar with Jorge Luis Borges works here are some lines:
“Time is the substance from which I am made. Time is a river which carries me along, but I am the river; it is a tiger that devours me, but I am the tiger; it is a fire that consumes me, but I am the fire.”
“Poets, like the blind, can see in the dark.”

Badman Silence (COMPLETE)

What if the smartest, toughest costumed bad ass in the world was totally evil? Meet Nemesis. He’s systematically been destroying the lives of every police chief in Asia, and now he’s set his sights on Washington, DC. Between you and me, the police don’t stand a chance. Richard Payne aka Creative Immortal has married print and screen with an ultra violent animation of the comic’s panels. This mash-up for DJ Deceit’s Dubstep monster ‘Badman Silence’ garnered the attention of the Nemesis creators themselves. Millar said of it, ‘Brilliant! I love it.’ And McNiven stated, ‘Absolutely spectacular!! I was blown away.’If your interested in more of his works check out his site!

Growing Up

This is excellent. The graphics are cute, yet non-flashy, the sound is fitting, and the voice over is fresh and impressionistic, it’s an all round great watch. The best part is the metaphor that reminds us adults that most of the times kids are wiser than what we typically give them credit for, since they were the more innocent, questionable versions of ourselves. If you think about it, it’s the adults that place these fears onto the children who then foster them into adulthood. This was the brainchild of Jr.canest, check out more of his stuff!

SCINTILLATION

This is an experimental film made up of over 35,000 amazingly colorful photographs, which when combined with an innovative mix of stop motion and live projection mapping techniques, births god like beauty. I would say this is one of the most mesmerizing videos I’ve come across, i was absolutely floored by the amount of perfection that i was seeing. I’m really curious about how they did it, and im sure you are too. I’ll let you know if anything comes up! Hope you enjoy.

LØV

Cool video, but it’s a bit of a weird ride so bare with me on this one. This is what the description says for the video: “Kate Bosworth. Her mysteriousness, her strength. Also another side to femininity, a stirring truthfulness which is renewed with every look, every movement accompanied by a wisp of assertiveness and purity. A new gracefulness progressing to a confident allure, conquering, a battling frailty. It starts with an urban universe almost futuristic where this femininity comes up against angles, up against emptiness where lines are sought for and where poetry is found. A surrealistic dance, frantic and lively giving a light note to this ballad, this adventure which is perhaps the landscape of a soul.

BIG BANG BIG BOOM

I cannot believe what i just saw, these guys depicted the evolution of Earth and showed a possible ending to it, all in one MASSIVE hand painted, stop motion of awesome fantasticness. This is simply amazing, uber levels of talent and creativity were at work, i don’t even want to begin to fathom the technical prowess required to give such a spectacular result. They paid attention to every little bit of detail, it actually makes me sick with happiness- i think i might throw up rainbows. Hats off to you guys, and to BLU for his direction and animation. HEAD ON

Lior Ben Horin out did himself with his 2011 graduation film for Bezalel academy for art and design in Jerusalem, Israel. This video will strap you in and take you on a high speed journey on the rails of sound, motion and color. You will smash through metaphoric walls of success and power and head to the realization that the journey your on is out of your control and what has happened has happened. The entire concept was erected to pay homage to “German expressionism, Sergei Eisenstein, Stanley kubrick and Gaspar Noé”. You can see the similarities with Noés’ ‘Enter the Void’ especially. The sound track racing along side with you during the video is by Nadav Ravid. More to be found here, if your interested.
